Windsurfing Slang
Always wondered what the latest windsurfing slang was? Well these are some terms that beginners need to know to make it out in the water.
Windsurfing has multitudes of words not commonly heard or spoken in everyday conversation, but are a must for the windsurfing enthusiast. Among them is rigger, a person with the newest most expensive gear but never seen in the water, or a jibe buoy, a person who falls and other windsurfers use as a turning point.
However, knowing the slang is the only the first half of the battle. The second, possibly more difficult challenge, is learning when and how to use the slang. For some this might come naturally but for others, not so much. For example, how would one go about using the word rigger? Let’s say you have a buddy. And this buddy of yours is always yapping on and on about his latest sail or his latest boom or how much his fin cost. But never have you caught a glimpse of this buddy out in the water. Typical rigger. Now to use the word while talking with some fellow surfers, you might say, "Wow man, I have this good buddy of mine who goes on and on about his new this or his new that. Dude, he is such a rigger."
Now everyone knows that slang is a huge part of everyday language and conversation. Now, windsurfing is no different. Whether it's out in the water or at hang out spot with your friends, you have to know the right word to use at the right time or it'll never work out. Here are some more words that might just make it a little easier to get along. Shred Betty-a female windsurfer. Dawn Patrol-getting a good session in before work or anything before seven in the morning. Epic-this term means an amazing day out in the water or it could be referring to the conditions.
Out in the water, whether it’s the lake or the ocean, people will judge you on three things. Your skill, your gear, and your slang and it’s usage. Be sure that you always have the proper amount of all three of these and you will always be in the clear. Knowing the slang and using the slang in the way it was intended to be used will boost you to the next level in all of your windsurfing endeavors.
